Eighty-three years ago on this very day in 1931, New Zealand suffered the worst natural disaster in its history, a two and a half minute earthquake in the Hawke’s Bay region of the North Island.
The earthquake devastated the city of Napier. The quake damage and ensuing fires destroyed nearly every building.
Rising from the ashes, the city rebuilt itself in the fashionable style of the time, art deco. Napier is the world's most consistently art deco city and one of the most beautiful seaside towns I have ever seen. Check out the gallery to see some of this wonderful city.
