Southeast Asia conjures images of sacred jungle temples, exotic culture, and strange and spicy food. In the nearly five months we have planned to spend there, we hope to discover all of these things and more. Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are all on our list of places to explore.
Over the centuries, the strong influence of Buddhist and Hindu religion has inspired the building of beautiful places of worship. Two of the major temples we hope to visit are Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Borobudur and Prambanan in Indonesia.
Street Food and Markets
Each country in Southeast Asia has an incredible array of cuisine. Though we won’t be sampling any fried insects, there are a wide range of dishes available in street carts and all-night markets. We're also interested in taking a cooking class or two, to bring these wonderful flavors home with us.
Dance and The Arts
From shadow puppets in Indonesia to colorful folk dances in Thailand, Southeast Asia has a long and interesting tradition of dance and the arts. Mesmerizing facial expressions and hand movements, striking costumes and complex choreography define the unique styles of dance found here.
